Employees stage dharna

BIDAR: Members of the Sanchar Nigam Executive Association staged a daylong dharna in protest against the apathy of their employer Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. about their problems, in Bidar on Thursday. Protestors sat in a dharna in front of the district head office and shouted slogans against the management. They said that the management had not fulfilled demands such as merging half the DA with their basic pay, constitution of a wage revision committee, removal of ceiling on gratuity and bonus payments and removal of discriminatory tax on prerequisites. District president D. Veeshetty, secretary Tippanna Posthar and others led the strike.

Woman dies of burns

RAICHUR: Padmavati, wife of Srinivas, reportedly received burns after her sari caught fire while she was trying to light the oven in her kitchen in Thimmapur locality in Raichur city on Wednesday. She died at the district civil hospital. The Netajinagar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Chennappa from Hemnur village of Deodurga taluk and Ramu and Hemanna from Manvi town on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 60,000 from them on Wednesday. They have been remanded to judicial custody. Separate cases have been registered at the Deodurga and the Manvi police stations. — Staff Correspondent

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging the underground power cable network, the following areas in Hubli will not have power supply between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release. The areas affected are Judges Quarters, Adhyapaknagar, Vijaynagar, Ashok Nagar, Bailappanavar Nagar, Kumbhakonam Plot, Aparna Apartment, Ramadoot Complex, Deshpandenagar and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Members of the Dharwad Zilla Dalit Sanghagala Okkuta have urged the Government to give wages to the employees working at Siddharoodh Math on par with the wages given at Yallamma Temple Trust in Saundatti. TIRUPATI: Rayapu Rameshbabu, president of a Tirupati-based social organisation `BOSS & CIPCA', has been invited to the World AIDS Conference slated to be held at Toronto in Canada from August 13.

Plea to recognise Balijas as BCs

KADAPA: Andhra Pradesh Balija Kapu Samkshema Sangham general secretary V.P. Narayanaswamy has urged the State Government to accord Backward Class status to the Balija community in tune with its electoral promise. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said a `Chalo Assembly' march would be organised to highlight issue. He also sought sanction of Rs. 25 crores as scholarships for BC students for 2006-07. A Balija student conference would be held at Tirupati on August 13, involving university students of Kadapa, Chittoor and Nellore districts, he said. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Australian Foods (India), an Indo-Australian joint venture, known for fresh-baked `Cookie Man' have signed up with premium airlines in India to supply cookies onboard.

Aspirant for sarpanch post beaten up

ADILABAD: Abdul Lateef, aspirant for sarpanch post of Marlaganda gram panchayat in Mudhole mandal, was allegedly beaten up by activists of Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Thursday during the last phase of gram panchayat elections. A case has been registered against Rathod Sham Rao and 37 others in the Mudhole police station in this connection.Barring this incident, elections to the 225 gram panchayats and 1,628 wards in Nirmal division were held peacefully with 81 per cent of polling recorded.— Staff Reporter

CITU demands withdrawal of GO

HYDERABAD: The State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Thursday asked the Government to withdraw GO 2501, facilitating induction of personnel, especially for Class IV posts, on contract basis. In a statement, R. Sudha Bhaskar and S. Veeraiah, president and general secretary of the State CITU, said the GO was part of the Government conspiracy to make contract workers take up the work done by permanent employees. — Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: Former mayor and TDP leader Bangi Anantaiah was at it again on Thursday. This time, he and his supporters rode buffaloes to protest against the alleged neglect of the spread of chikungunya. Four killed in accident

KURNOOL: Four persons were killed and another sustained injuries when an autorickshaw and an APSRTC bus collided near Yemmiganur in Kurnool district on Thursday. According to reports, the auto was coming from Muravani in Peddakadubur mandal to Yemmiganur. All the victims were traveling by the auto. The deceased were identified as Talari Narsanna (70), Nagabhushanam 35, Nagendra 25 and Somaiah (35). All hailed from Muravani village.

Six killed in auto-lorry collision

Kakinada: Six women of Gudaparty village were killed and seven others suffered grievous injuries when the auto in which they were travelling collided with a tipper near the checkpost on the outskirts of Peddapuram on Thursday night. While five were killed on the spot, the others succumbed in the hospital. — Correspondent

Low pressure over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: A low pressure area has formed over north-west Bay of Bengal off north Orissa and West Bengal coast on Thursday, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Thursday evening. It is likely to become more marked in the next one or two days. Under its influence, rainfall is likely to increase over north coastal Andhra Pradesh during in the next two to three days. — Staff Reporter
