Relief yet to reach Adilabad mandals

Staff Reporter

Minister also admits to district administration's lapses

  • Three villages in Jainad mandal do not figure in the list of marooned or inundated
  • Flood victims get food packets with no drinking water
  • Chief Minister's promised relief yet to arrive

GRIEF STRICKEN: A woman in Sangvi village narrating her tale of woe after she returned to her home in Adilabad on Thursday.

ADILABAD: The district administration is yet to get its bearings right and reach out to the victims of flood havoc in the three mandals of Tamsi, Jainad and Bela. The Social Welfare Minister and district in-charge D.S. Redya Naik also conceded to complaining villagers of the administration's failure in providing relief. He was on a visit to Pendalwada in Jainad mandal.

Besides, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has dubbed the administration's efforts as lackadaisical. Quoting from an official `damage report' updated on August 9, TDP spokesman Jogu Ramanna and publicity secretary B. Goverdhan Reddy pointed out to the omission of names of Kamai, Koora and Anandpur villages in Jainad mandal from the list of those either marooned or inundated.

"Leave alone rushing relief to these villages, the administration has failed even to recognise these villages as flood-hit.

The three villages were literally in water for three days from August 6. Even today the condition is pathetic in these villages'', say the TDP leaders.

    Fabricated figures

They also criticised the report as being `doctored'. "A glaring manipulation of figures, the loss in Adilabad town was being projected at Rs. 5.8 crores,'' they added.

Geetabai of Sangvi (old) said the villagers had been supplied with food packets on Thursday but there was no drinking water. There was no supply of bleaching powder as promised and no medicines to tackle outbreak of viral fevers.

"Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had promised an immediate supply of 20 kg rice and 5 litres kerosene during his visit. But, even a quantity of 10 kg rice has not come in so far.'' said K. Prashant Reddy of Kamai village.

Mr. Redya Naik had disbursed relief money and food grains to the villagers of Pendalwads on Thursday evening. He also reviewed the situation with officials.
