Entire police strength of Adambakkam station transferred

Staff Reporter

Follows harassment of a local resident by two constables

  • 45 constables shifted to the Armed Reserve Police
  • They fear mindset of policemen will be affected

TAMBARAM: In an unprecedented move, all the 51 policemen, including the inspector, attached to the Adambakkam police station have been transferred. The transfers come a couple of days after the suspension of two constables attached to the police station for coercing and harassing a resident in Adambakkam.

While 45 constables have been transferred to the Armed Reserve Police, 5 sub-inspectors and the inspector reportedly have been shifted to other police stations. As news about their transfer orders reached the police station, the immediate reaction of the personnel was anger. Most of the personnel gathered at the police station premises and were vocal about their reaction. They sought to know the justification of transferring an entire lot of personnel from a station just because two of their colleagues were penalised for erring. While, they had no other option but to join their new duty places, some of them said they would approach the courts.

They said the mass punishment could affect the mindset of the policemen all across the St. Thomas Mount district and even the metropolis.

Those, who had discharged their duties with sincerity, would be mocked at when they reach their new workplaces, a constable said.

However, senior police officers said such stern action was long overdue.

With the Chief Minister himself handling the Home portfolio and the issue of policemen demanding `mamool' being raised in the ongoing Assembly session, pulling up the policemen was only appropriate, they said.

Despite efforts being taken by the top brass to project a clean and good image of the department, lower rung personnel at the police stations behaved indifferently, the officers said and hoped the latest action would serve as a caution to policemen all across the city.
