`Pink alert' by AIADMK member
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Treasurer of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) legislature party D. Jayakumar on Thursday urged the Government to take immediate steps to protect parts of Royapuram constituency, which had been turning "pink", thanks to the spread of iron ore particles stored at the Chennai Port.
Raising the issue during the debate on the demand for grants for Environment and Forests Department, Mr. Jayakumar said corporation wards 17, 18 and 22 had been called "pink area" because of the pollution caused by the iron ore.
The particles from the iron ore posed a health hazard to the locals, more particularly at a time when there was bright scope for extending the electric multiple unit train service to Royapuram.
It was agreed during the previous AIADMK rule to shift the iron ore handling to the Ennore Port in 2008 based on the Pollution Control Board's opinion, he recalled.
He wanted to know if the Government would come forward to stop the handling of the minerals at the Chennai Port.
The Minister for Electricity, Arcot N. Veerasamy said necessary steps would be taken after conducting a proper study.
