CMDA to decide on commercial development of space

Special Correspondent

Has identified sites for multi-level parking

CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will shortly decide on the commercial development of space at nine Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations in the city, Jayanthi, CMDA vice-chairperson, said.

Noting that 1.9 lakh square metres of space was available Ms. Jayanthi told a session on urban competence at the conference on sustainable public-private partnerships in infrastructure organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (southern region) and the State Government that the question now was how to carry out the development — build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis or any other mode.

On the commercial development of the area along the proposed Outer Ring Road, she said the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company had prepared a feasibility report in this regard. Again, the question was how to do it — through a special purpose vehicle or a public-private partnership model.

The Authority had identified sites for multi-level parking in the city. The matter of forming a unified transport body was also engaging the attention of the Government.

The second phase of the MRTS would be completed by early next year, she added. Sameer Vyas, managing director of the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation, said the establishment of many reverse osmosis plants for treatment of industrial effluents at Tirupur would be completed by December at a cost of Rs. 400 crore. Chandrashekar Prabhu, urban planner, referred to PPP experiences in Mumbai and said that unless people were involved, PPP projects would not be successful. N.K. Srinivasan, director (marketing) of Bharat Earth Movers Limited, said continuity in leadership and minimal interference from the Government or politicians contributed to the success of the Delhi Metro Rail project.
