Colourful handlooms, handicrafts on show

National Art and Craft Fair involves work of 60 artisans from all over the country

CHENNAI : Products ranging from colourful handlooms to intricately carved handicrafts are on display at the National Art and Craft Fair, which opened on Tuesday at the D.K. Marriage Hall in Anna Nagar.

The fair promises to be a delight for those love variety and novelty in handlooms and handicrafts, with stalls featuring products including handlooms with zari work from Jodhpur, home linen from Jaipur, wooden kitchenware, and Narayanpet saris.

Flower vases made of ebony wood, available from Rs. 300, and whitewood articles including carved walking stick (Rs.160) are sure to catch the fancy of the visitors.

Temple jewellery from Coimbatore, terracotta accessories and `Impon' jewels from Kerala using five metals, which is offered for nominal cost, needs special mention.

The collection of products is wide with sheesham wood and rosewood furniture, toys, Pathamadai mats, mouth fresheners, radium and `Navadhanya' idols.

The stalls featuring handlooms also offer an array of traditional textiles from different States - shadow work textiles of Bengal, fulkari work from Punjab (Rs.350 onwards), Kashmir kurtas and ghagra cholis with glass and beads, to mention only a few.

Ashok Sharma of Art Collection, the organiser, said that about 60 artisans from all over the country in the expo were involved in the exhibition, which showcased products worth Rs. 20 lakh. There is a discount of 10 per cent on handicrafts and 20 per cent on textiles, he added.

The expo is open between 10 a.m. and 9.30 p.m. till August 18.
