Chennai: For the second successive day showers lashed many parts of Chennai and its suburbs on Thursday evening.

According to data from the Regional Meteorological Centre, Nungambakkam received 10 mm and Meenambakkam 2.7 mm from the evening downpour. A cloudy sky with showers in the evening or night is forecast for Friday.

Weather officials said that rain clouds develop when hot air from the land comes into contact with moist air from the sea. The sea breeze set earlier than usual on Thursday. The rains also brought down the daytime temperature in the city and suburbs.

Tambaram recorded 20 mm rainfall from the downpour on Wednesday, while Chembarambakkam station recorded 10 mm rain.

In some places, the downpour was accompanied by gusty winds.
