DAMAGE-CONTROL: Fire and Rescue Services personnel trying to put the fire that broke out in a leather godown in the city on Thursday. - Photo: VipinChandran
KOCHI: A leather godown on the top floors of a shoe shop in the city was gutted in a fire suspected to have been caused by short-circuit. The top two floors of the building above Mary Footwear Agencies along the road to Ernakulam South Railway Station were gutted. Around 15 fire tenders from different fire stations, Kochi Refineries, Air Force, Indian Navy and Cochin Port Trust had to struggle for nearly four hours to contain the fire. Thick black smoke billowed from the building as the leather and rubber articles stored in the godown caught fire. No one was injured in the mishap, which is believed to have caused damage of around Rs.50 lakhs, said the fire force personnel. The incident occurred at 3.30 p.m. Fire force personnel said that lack of access to the areas under fire caused the delay in containing the fire. Heavy rain during the evening checked the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings in one of the busiest streets in the city.
