This Day That Age
A Bill to place the rulers of former Indian States on a par with the rest of the citizens before the civil law of the land was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 10 by a Congress member, Mr. M.L. Dwivedi. The Bill seeks to amend the Code of Civil Procedure which gives special immunity to the former rulers of Indian States from the processes of the civil law. The statement of objects and reasons says this immunity is not warranted, equality before law being one of the fundamental principles of the Constitution. "All rulers of former Indian States enjoy large private properties and some of them carry on business. They are in full enjoyment of the rights and privileges of a citizen and they must be subjected to the liabilities and duties of a citizen."
