Coast Guard joins relief operations

Sandeep Dikshit

NEW DELHI: The armed forces on Friday involved the Coast Guard in flood relief operations in various parts of the country. Three helicopters of the Coast Guard have been deployed to airlift relief material from Daman and Bhavnagar to the flood-affected areas of Gujarat while four Army Aviation helicopters have been moved from Nashik for relief operations. Apart from the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Navy is actively engaged in rescuing people.

4,000 evacuated

In Maharashtra, over 100 Army troops have been de-requisitioned from Akola but about 1,000 soldiers are still carrying out relief operations at Nanded, Parbhani, Jalna, Buldhana, Nandurbar, Ahmadnagar, Aurangabad and Sholapur. Nearly 4,000 people have been evacuated to relief camps and 12,000 food packets distributed.

Army Aviation helicopters undertook 11 sorties and evacuated 37 persons.
