Garbage clearing drive to be extended to villages

Special Correspondent

Campaign to be carried out through SHGs

Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told the Assembly during question hour on Friday that the campaign to clear solid waste and garbage by municipal workers in Pondicherry to ensure `a beautiful Union Territory', would be extended to rural areas. Replying to a question tabled by Nanda T. Saravanan (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), the Chief Minister said that self-help groups would be used to carry out the scheme.

He said that currently sanitary workers were engaged in clearing garbage almost round the clock in Pondicherry and its suburbs.

It was the intention of the Government to give Pondicherry a clean look to attract tourists. He brushed aside the criticism of A.Anbalagan (AIADMK) that the cleanliness scheme was a failure.
