Free higher education not possible, says Bishop

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman has said that even as the theory of the survival of the fittest has made greater inroads in society, some politicians are propagating obsolete ideas that professional education is within the reach of everyone free-of-cost.

Inaugurating a research centre attached to the English Department of Fatima Mata National College here on Friday, he said that free professional education was not possible anywhere in the world without the assistance of some generous souls.

The Bishop said, ``had the Governments not experimented with unrealistic ideas and not shirked their responsibility towards the marginalised and socially and economically backward sections by sharing their burden of study, the gems from such social groups would have reached envious rung in society''.

He said that the predicament of the student community today was that only a few strive for greater heights, while the remaining were satisfied with what is available around.

Vice-Chairman of the Planning Board Prabhat Patnaik inaugurated the research centre attached to the Economics Department of the college.
