EXPRESSIONS: A painting by Shivlall
NEW DELHI: A ten-day exhibition of paintings by Delhi-based artist Shivlall opened at Triveni Kala Sangam here on Friday. Titled "Face-scape" (The Panorama of Life), the exhibition showcases landscapes, human bodies, animal figures and plants. "All the works have come through my imagination. It is actually a step-by-step journey into an artist's life," says Shivlall. The paintings have been made in acrylic on canvas, acrylic on board, drawings and charcoals. According to art critic Suneet Chopra, Shivlall has given his work an up-to-date look with elements of modernisation, graffiti, personal narrative and spontaneous expressions. He underpins it with a strong armature of line, rolled on colour, and a compositional skill that has a deceptively ephemeral character. "Shivlall's exhibition reflects a persevering trend in our art tradition. The concept of human being as part and parcel of the environment is obvious from the haunting images like those of the Mohenjodaro dancing girl, the emaciated Gandhara Buddha or the lithe Nataraja of Chola in bronze. All of them are minimal in terms of mass but spread into the space around them with remarkable ease," adds Chopra. Shivlall has held solo shows in Punjab, Delhi and Mumbai. His works have also been showcased in Germany, France, Scotland, Italy and the United States.
