England women sitting pretty

LONDON: Claire Taylor's unbeaten 105 and Laura Newton's 85 put England in a strong position on the third day of the first women's cricket Test at Leicester on Thursday. At stumps, the host was 229 for two in its second innings, an overall lead of 154.

Earlier, a patient 69 by Hemlata Kala was instrumental in India securing a handy 75-run lead in its first innings.

She prolonged the Indian batting effort by putting up valuable partnerships with the tailenders.

Laura Newton and Claire Taylor added 155 runs for the second wicket to help England out of a potentially precarious situation.

The scores: England 223 & 229 for two in 73 overs (Claire Taylor 105 not out, Laura Newton 85) vs. India 298 in 138.1 overs (Jhulan Goswami 69, Hemlata Kala 69, Mithali Raj 47, L. Newton three for 57) — Agencies
