Air-India suffers big defeat

Bradman Invitation XI wins opener

Bangalore: Defending champion Air-India suffered an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of ONGC in a Fair and Lovely Menz Active Twenty20 Bradman Cup tournament's Zone `B' match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday. With rains truncating the match into a nine-over-per-side clash, batsmen from both teams chanced their arms and banked on luck and in the end, ONGC edged past Air-India's 81, with seven deliveries to spare.

The ONGC chase had a good start as Radhey Shyam (25) and Gautam Gambhir (28) shared a 64-run partnership. Gambhir slashed Siddharth Trivedi and also scooped a few over the infield and found an equally aggressive partner in Radhey Shyam. However, the duo was dismissed within a span of eight deliveries as leg-spinner Piyush Chawla foxed Radhey Shyam and Praveen Kumar castled Gambhir. However, Gagan Khoda (12 n.o.) guided his team to victory.

Amit scalps three

Earlier, Air-India scored 81 for six in nine overs. Opener Robin Uthappa top-scored with 29. He slammed two sixers off Amit Sharma before losing his timber to the spinner while trying for an encore. The remaining batsmen succumbed with a series of mistimed swipes. Amit grabbed three wickets.

In the tournament's inaugural Zone `A' match, opener Subhomoy Das's 40 (41b, 5x4) helped Bradman Invitation XI defeat Indian Airlines by seven wickets. Indian Airlines scored 114 for six in 20 overs and Bradman Invitation XI scored the winning runs in 18.5 overs.

Dhiman shines

India under-19 player Gaurav Dhiman set up KSCA XI's 28-run victory over Indian Airlines in a late night Zone `A' match under lights. After rains robbed six overs during the Airlines chase, the target for the visitors was fixed at 129 from 14 overs as per the Duckworth Lewis method. However Airlines managed to muster only 100 for five in 14 overs.

The scores: Air-India 81 for six in nine overs lost to ONGC 84 for two in 7.5 overs; Indian Airlines 114 for six in 20 overs (Shafiq Khan 43) lost to Bradman Invitation XI 115 for three in 18.5 overs (Subhomoy Das 40); KSCA XI 179 for four in 20 overs (Gaurav Dhiman 84 n.o., Devraj Patil 50) bt Indian Airlines 100 for five in 14 overs.
