Prachura starts with a win

BANGALORE: Seeded players had it easy in the opening round of the State under-19 chess championship at the State Youth Centre here on Friday. P.P. Prachura defeated H.N. Nishanth in the boys' section, while Soumya Vaze beat P.Nivedita.

The results (first round):

Boys: Aniket Pawate bt Chetan Raheja; Chicholimath bt Rahul D'Souza; Prakash Rao bt G.A. Stany; P.P. Prachura bt H.N. Nishanth; A. Balakishen bt Sameer D. Ghotane; Saurabh Malgavi lost to H.S. Karthik; R. Nagesh bt R. Sanjay; Kedar Udupa bt Sashank Udupa; Vishnu Ramnath bt Shankar Goud Patil.

Girls: Shristi Shetty bt Pallavi Bharadwaj; K. Shruthi bt H.D. Supriya; Soumya Vaze bt P. Nivedita; Pavitra Jagtap bt Prerna; Priyanaka bt B.K. Shruti; Shalon bt Supriya Sarage.

Top players confirm

Some of the leading players in the State including N. Sanjay, M.S. Tej Kumar, Arvind Sastry, Sriram Sarja besides Asian under-8 bronze medallist M. Satvik have confirmed their participation in the Malleswaram Association's FIDE-rated Karnataka chess championship to be held here from Aug.16 to 20.

Entries for the tournament which carries a prize money of Rs. 40,000 close on Aug. 13. Further details may be had from Malleswaram Association, Ph: 23311276 or 23311924.

Venkatesh, Ramu excel

K.Y. Venkatesh and Ramu Yamanaappa of Karnataka, who were part of the Indian team for the European Open sports meet for dwarfs held from Aug. 4 to 6 at Belfast, returned home with medals.

Venkatesh claimed the gold in hockey, silver in basketball and football and a bronze in badminton. Ramu won the silver in 200m and football.

CMR National PS wins

Host, CMR National Public School defeated Bethany High School 33-13 in the inter-school basketball tournament here on Friday. In another tie, Army School downed National Hill View Public School 28-9.

The results:

Boys: CMR NPS bt Bethany HS 33-13; NPS, Rajaji Nagar bt VNS 29-19; Kensri School bt CMR NPS `B' 25-21; Army School bt National Hill View PS 28-9.

Girls: NPS, Rajajinagar bt NAFL 28-4; FAPS bt National Hill View PS 20-13.
