Rajesh Choudhary reigns supreme

HYDERABAD: As expected, Rajesh Choudhary won the title in the Laser Radial category on the final day of races in the Laser sailing National championship at the Hussainsagar lake here on Friday. It was his 15th National title overall in Radial and Standard rigs.

In the Laser Standard class, N.S. Johal clinched the title with two fine wins.

The day's proceedings began with the Standard fleet and the 4.7 class taking to the water in the morning session. The winds were quite strong ranging between 15 to 18 knots and so the heavier sailors in the standard rigs had a big advantage.

The conditions were ideal for the tall, well-built and vastly experienced Johal and he made the most of it, winning both races with handsome margins.

In the 4.7 class, Navin Shirodkar finished off with a clean slate having won all the ten races that were conducted. It was a remarkable performance by the NDA cadet.

In the same category, Mrinalini Santhanam of Tamil Nadu Sailing Association proved that she too is a sailor with tremendous potential.

In the Mistral class of windsurfers, Ghanshyam proved to be one of the most consistent performers. The results:

Laser 4.7 class: (Race 9): 1. Navin Shirodkar (NDA) 39m 01s; 2. Mrinalini Santhanam (TNSA) 41m 13s; 3. Sooraj Sadanandan (TNSA) 42m 45s. (Race 10): 1. Navin Shirodkar 41m 28s; 2. Mrinalini Santhanam 44m 55s; 3. Sooraj Sadanandan 45m 48s.

Laser Radial: (Race 7): 1. Rajesh Choudhary (AYN) 55m 59s; 2. B.K. Rout (AYN) 56m 27s; 3. P. Madhu (AYN) 57m 37s. (Race 8): 1. Rajesh Choudhary 44m 40s; 2. B.K. Rout 44m 52s; 3. P. Madhu 45m 13s. (Race 9): 1. B.K. Rout 47m 35s; 2. Rajesh Choudhary 47m 48s; 3. Dharmendra Singh (AYN) 47m 59s.
