PUDUKOTTAI: Ten self-help groups (SHGs), each comprising 20 members, were formed by the Government Arts College for Women on Saturday. This was done at the initiative of the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the college, Mahalir Thittam and the Rural Education and Entrepreneurship Trust, Pudukottai. The students would be initiated into vocational activities such as tailoring, embroidery and jardosi during their spare time. It would help then earn money while learning, said Head of Department of Economics S. Suguna. "As many students of our college hail from economically weaker sections, there is an overwhelming response to the proposal," said Principal V. Jayalakshmi. The SHGs would be initiated into economic activities after initial training, said S. Prithiviraj, Managing Trustee, Rural Education and Entrepreneurship Trust. Project Officer of Mahalir Thittam R. Subbiah distributed the registers to the students.
