`Convene special Assembly session'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Nationalist Congress Party president and MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri on Friday met the Delhi Assembly Speaker, Chaudhary Prem Singh, and urged him to convene a special session of the Delhi Assembly to discuss the crisis arising out of the recent Supreme Court order directing resumption of the sealing exercise against commercial establishments in the Capital's residential areas from September 15 that would affect lakhs of people.

Mr. Bidhuri told Mr. Prem Singh that a unique situation had arisen after Thursday's order of the Supreme Court and the fear of bulldozers and demolitions once again haunts the people of Delhi who stand to not only lose their source of employment but also use of their premises. A large number of industrial, skilled and semi-skilled workers along with owners of various commercial activities would stand to lose their jobs. "In view of the complex situation, it is in the best interests of the citizens that a special session of the Delhi Assembly be convened at the earliest so that the elected representatives can discuss the situation and try to resolve the issue to the satisfaction of all."

Mr. Bidhuri said the House could also express its will on the issue of the new Master Plan of Delhi and urge the Union Urban Development Ministry to take action to address the concerns of the people and elected representatives. Stating that special sessions had been held in the past also to discuss issues like relocation of industrial units and regularisation of unauthorised colonies, Mr. Bidhuri said the Capital and its residents are living in constant fear and it was time that concrete steps were taken to move things in the right direction.
