Arrested for selling CGHS medicines

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly involved in smuggling medicines out of Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) dispensaries and selling them in the open market in the Capital's satellite towns have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered smuggled CGHS medicines worth Rs. 10 lakhs from them.

According to the police, Rajinder Kumar, Naveen Kumar Uppal and Anil Kumar were arrested in separate raids carried out on Thursday.

The police said Rajinder had a chemist's shop at Bahalgarh in Haryana and he regularly bought medicines from Naveen, who had a medicine store at Bhagirath Place in Chandni Chowk. Rajinder's business ran into losses and he had to close his shop.

He then got in touch with Naveen and hatched a conspiracy to smuggle out medicines from CGHS dispensaries.

Naveen agreed to buy those medicines at low prices and subsequently sell them in Delhi's satellite towns. Anil used to work with Rajinder.

Naveen allegedly befriended some employees of some CGHS dispensaries, including one in Paharganj, and began smuggling out medicines that were not meant for sale. The police said Naveen managed to smuggle out about 50 cartons of medicines from various CGHS dispensaries every day.
