NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday accused the Centre of "befooling" the citizens of the Capital by bringing in the "ambiguous" Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, that failed to provide any relief to a majority of the residents affected by the demolition and sealing drives of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Claiming that the Act was full of lacunae and ambiguities, senior BJP Councillor Vijender Gupta said almost 97 per cent of unauthorised constructions across the city had not been given relief under the new law that grants a one-year moratorium on removal of unauthorised constructions and sealing of illegal commercial premises operating from residential areas. Addressing a press conference at Town Hall, Mr. Gupta said he has written to Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy stating that the Act provides no protection to any unauthorised constructions raised without any sanction plan. "The Centre's notification, therefore, provides relief to only a small segment of people who have done construction beyond the sanctioned plan, while a majority are those that have come without any approval," he added. All these lacunae and ambiguities in the notification clearly proved that the Congress-led Union Government was not serious about protecting the interests of people of Delhi, Mr. Gupta charged. Urging the Minister to save the citizens from bulldozers and sealing squads of the civic body, Mr. Gupta said the only way to provide relief to residents was to suitably amend the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 and implement it immediately. The Leader of the Opposition in MCD, Subhash Arya, also accused the Centre of cheating the residents.
