Special `Janmashtami' planned

NEW DELHI: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) will celebrate "Janmashtami" in a special way at its premises here on Sunday with a "Sri Krishna Leela" performance by artistes from Sri Ram Kala Kendra.

On August 15, the ISKON Youth Forum will present a rock band and dance drama, while Lord Krishna's "abhishek" will be performed with 108 "kalashs" and 108 "aartis" the following day. The "Mahabhishek" of the Lord will be performed at 12 midnight.

Kites on display

NEW DELHI: A kite exhibition is being organised at Hauz Qazi Chowk in the Walled City of Delhi this Saturday. Apart from Indian kites, those from other countries including China will also be displayed.

In a statement on Friday, former Union Minister Vijay Goel said kite flying was a symbol of India's composite culture and called for setting up a kite museum in the Walled City area.

Rules for promotion

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee Chairman J. K. Sharma on Friday held a meeting with senior civic body health officials and discussed problems relating to promotions and other service matters of doctors employed in MCD-run hospitals.

Mr. Sharma called for the formulation of proper rules and regulations so that seniority of doctors was maintained. He asked Additional Commissioner K.D. Akolia to examine such cases and put up his recommendations before the Standing Committee for it to take a decision.

Sanitation drive

NEW DELHI: Under the leadership of senior MCD Councillor Ramesh Dutta, civic body workers and Nehru Brigade volunteers carried out a sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive from the historic Red Fort to India Gate on Friday.

Mr. Dutta, who is also chairman of the civic body's medical relief and public health committee, accompanied the civic body workers and volunteers. At India Gate, they were received by former Union Home Minister Buta Singh, who lauded their efforts.

Cop convicted

NEW DELHI: A special CBI court here on Friday sentenced a Delhi police sub-inspector to three-and-a-half years' RI for demanding and accepting bribe.

Special CBI Judge Vinod Goel convicted SI Jai Singh and also imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on him for accepting a bribe of Rs. 500. Jai Singh was arrested red-handed on December 27, 2001, while accepting money from complainant Rajesh Mishra.

He was posted at the Janakpuri police station and had demanded Rs. 2,000 from Mishra who was booked for drinking in a public place.
