SC panel member reviews status of Scheduled Castes in the district SC panel member reviews status of SCs in district

  • Takes exception to absence of SP at review meeting
  • 70-odd police cases pending in the district
  • DEO asked to conduct surprise checks in hostels

Sangareddy: National Commission for Scheduled Castes member V. Devender has castigated Medak police for their casual approach in dealing with the accused under SC and ST Atrocities Act.

Mr. Devender, who was here to review the status of SCs in the district with 25 different departments, was vociferous in expressing his displeasure over the absence of Superintendent of Police P.V. Sunil Kumar, who was represented by ASP Alexander, at the review meeting.

He expressed concern over the 70 odd cases that were pending in the district and said that Sub-Inspectors and RDOs should be made responsible for delivering speedy justice.

He also pointed out that the RDOs, while selecting beneficiaries under various schemes and programmes, should give priority to the weaker sections.

He wanted the DEO to conduct surprise checks on hostels and observed that the situation is worse in remote villages and tandas. Mr. Devender requested the district administration to check the antecedents of various non-Governmental organisations that collect funds under the garb of SC welfare.

District Collector B. Venkatesam, enlisting steps initiated by the administration, said this year has been declared as the Year of Social Justice and financial support has been given to organisations conducting awareness campaigns in villages.

He said that Rs. 1.5 crore has been spent on the development of welfare hostels in the district. ZP Chairman M. Balaiah was also present.
