Security tightened at Kolkata airport
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA:
Security at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport, already in a state of high alert following an anonymous bomb threat earlier this week, has been further strengthened in the wake of reports of a terror plot to blow up aircrafts leaving the United Kingdom for the United States on Thursday.
Those entering the airport concourse were frisked and a manual check was being made of passengers' hand luggage, official sources said here on Friday. Central Industrial Security Force personnel have intensified patrolling.
A ban on the entry of visitors is in place in view of the customary security measures taken during the run-up to Independence Day. The alert earlier sounded at the airport will continue till August 20, an official said.
Kolkata airport is considered extra-sensitive because of its proximity to the North East and the international borders.
While the security system of the Airports Authority of India has been re-activated the police have stepped out vigil outside the airport. Check-posts have been set up to monitor movement of vehicles.
