Numbers of victims vary

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The numbers of the dead and injured in the bombings on Mumbai's suburban trains a month ago, vary according to the ex-gratia payment data of the Western Railway and the Maharashtra Government.

The Railways made the ex-gratia payment of Rs. five lakh to the families of 185 identified persons. They paid nothing for an unidentified dead person. But the State paid Rs. one lakh each for 180 persons.

Similarly, the Railways paid Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000 to those who suffered serious injuries and the beneficiaries are 261 but in the case of the State Government, 434 persons received this aid. The Maharashtra Government also paid Rs. 5,000 to those who suffered minor injuries and 82 persons got this payment.

The Western Railway has published on its website the names and addresses of the next of kin of those dead along with the payment details and also the list of the injured who received assistance. Railways and State Government sources could not explain why the figures were at variance.
