`The focus is on discovering new sources of water'
CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Public Health Department is busy these days in tracing the Paleo channel of the ancient Saraswati river. An official spokesman said here on Friday that the State Government was interested in this project as it wanted to find out whether there was any underground aquafier in Haryana for this channel, if it existed, could help in solving the perennial and persistent problem of water shortage in the State. He said satellite images had confirmed the presence of the Saraswati river and the focus was on discovering new sources of water by linking the past with the future. He said that satellite images had confirmed that the major course of the Saraswati was present through the present day Ghaggar river which further passed through parts of Haryana including Kurukshetra, Kalayat and Kaithal. Finally the channel passed through parts of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and adjoining regions in Pakistan before discharging into Rann of Kutch.
Mega-project
This mega-project would be launched with the assistance of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Water Resources, the Oil and Natural Gas Agency, the Archaeological Survey of India, the Geological Survey of India and the Indian Space Research Organisation, he added.
