`Kamala' comes to city

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: After a fairly long interval, a play by Vijay Tendulkar is to be staged in the city. Silver Blue Productions is back here to stage "Kamala" on August 15 at the Centre for Film and Drama on Millers Road.

The play deals with the theme of male chauvinism and the issues of morality and hypocrisy.

The current trends in journalism are questioned where sensationalism is given importance at the expense of human values and dignity. The position of the Indian woman in a male-centric society is closely examined.

The play is based on a real-life incident some years ago when a journalist actually "bought" a girl from the flesh market as an expose and presented her at a press conference.

Whether a self-seeking journalist was actually rescuing the young woman or treating her as an object to gain professional advantage is dealt with in the play. Also whether any thought was given to the fate of Kamala after the media had its day with her.

The play "Kamala" had created a sensation when it was first staged and had remained a thought-provoking theatre production since then.
