RENEWED HOPE: The unfinished Perambur flyover.
CHENNAI:
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government has decided to implement a Rs.217-crore package for north Chennai, where a large number of low-income families reside.
Announcing this in the Assembly on Friday, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said the project envisaged provision of all amenities to the residents. He said work on the Perambur flyover would commence again. It was launched in 1998 when the DMK was in power. The facility, costing Rs. 21 crore then, would link north Chennai with the southern parts. The previous Government had brought the work to a halt by constituting an enquiry commission in August 2001. As no work was done in the last five years, people were experiencing hardship.
"On assuming office again, the DMK Government decided to complete the flyover in a year," Mr. Stalin said. An additional Rs. 5 crore-Rs. 6 crore would be incurred because of the delay, he said.
