KOLKATA: The Information Technology sector in Kolkata may not have seen as many high profile crime cases as its Bangalore counterpart, but no one wants to be caught napping.
Need for caution
"Given the global scenario, one must be careful as these are high brand-value, image enhancing industries," said Shivaji Ghosh, Additional Commissioner, Kolkata Police. He was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on `Issues of Security for the IT sector in West Bengal,' organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in which top officials from the police, State Government as well as IT companies participated.
Employees `most vulnerable'
"Crimes in Kolkata's IT sector, as of now, are mainly of the opportunistic kind like snatching, but crimes with an agenda like terrorism cannot be ruled out," said Mr. Ghosh. Kolkata's IT sector, spread over about 430 acres, is concentrated in what has been recently rechristened as `Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority,' formerly known as sector V of the Salt Lake area. It is the 30,000 people working there, rather than the establishment or raw materials, who are seen as most vulnerable, according to the West Bengal IT Secretary, Siddharth.
