Correction

In the report published in The Hindu of August 11, 2006 on the Bangalore seminar on ``The Media and the Judiciary,'' which was organised as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the High Court of Karnataka, the views of N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of this newspaper, on a couple of points were inaccurately reported. He expressed the view that a Code of Practice of the kind voluntarily framed by editors and publishers of major newspapers in the United Kingdom and enforced (by the Press Complaints Commission) would be a good instrument of accountability for the Indian press; but he did not say that ``a regulatory mechanism for the media on the lines of what exists in the United Kingdom is absent here,'' as reported. Secondly, while Mr. Ram regretted the absence of a broadcast law and a broadcast regulatory framework for satellite television channels in India and also noted the contrast between the state monopolising terrestrial television and having no regulatory framework of any kind for satellite television, he wanted the broadcast media in India to have the same freedom and constitutional protection as the press instead of the ``incomplete freedom'' they enjoy today.
