Jet Airways suspends staffer at Heathrow

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: Jet Airways on Saturday confirmed that one of its employees, Amin Asmin Tariq, was among those arrested in connection with the alleged abortive plot to blow up American airliners.

In a statement here, it said Tariq had been suspended ``pending a full investigation having not reported for duty yesterday and today.''

The statement said Tariq, a British passport holder, was transferred to Jet Airways in March 2006 from a private security firm, G4S (previously known as Securicor) after the airline ended its contract with it for hiring passenger service representatives.

``Under U.K. employment legislation, TUPEE — Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations — was applicable which meant that Jet Airways had to take on those employees who had been employed by G4S prior to the airline bringing the contract in-house in respect of passenger service representatives. G4S is a reputable agency which provides services to British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, SAS [Scandinavian Airlines System] etc.,'' it added.

The airlines pointed out that all G4S employees, including those transferred to Jet Airways, had been cleared by the Department for Transport (U.K.) to work at the airport.

``Typically, it can take up to 12 weeks for an individual to obtain security clearance to work in Heathrow following references and referees from five different sources,'' it said. Tariq is among the 19 alleged suspects whose assets have been frozen by the British Government.
