Silver jubilee celebrations

Erode: The Sakthi Polytechnic College at Appakudal, conducted by the Sakthi Foundation, a unit of Sakthi Sugars, is celebrating its Silver Jubilee from August 16 to 18. To mark the celebrations, a three-day open house exhibition will be held. The college will also display project models. The Additional Director (Examination), Directorate of Technical Education, S. Arumugam, the Chief Educational Officer P. Kuppusamy, Managing Director, Sri Senthil Autos, Erode, M.K. Maheswaran, and others will attend the celebrations. - Staff Reporter

Paddy seeds for sale

ERODE: Certified paddy seeds such as IR 20, ADT 38, Co 43, White Ponni and Samba are being sold at all the agricultural extension centres in the Lower Bhavani ayacut area, according to the Joint Director of Agriculture, Jagath Narayanan. In a press release here on Saturday, he said the Government had granted Rs. 2 as subsidy for a kg of paddy seed.

Ganesh darshan exhibition

ERODE: The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, inaugurated the Ganesh darshan exhibition on Friday at the Poompohar showroom run by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Corporation. The Collector said that Rs 1.10 lakhs worth of Ganesh idols were sold last year.

"Pay property tax"

Nagapattinam: Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar has appealed to the people to pay property tax at the earliest.

The Collector presented a cheque of Rs. 10.54 lakh as property tax for the Collectorate to Vijayakumar, Commissioner of Municipality on Thursday.

The Collector said that the taxes were needed for taking up developmental work in municipalities, panchayats and town panchayats. He said action would be taken against defaulters.

PDS rice seized

Nagapattinam: A special squad seized five bags of rice, each weighing 50 kg, meant for public distribution, from one Sambandam in Tharangampadi on Friday. The bags were handed over to Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC).

Thirty-five litres of kerosene was seized from Appu alias Rajendran of Thirukolakka at Sirkali. Four bogus ration cards were seized from Habibullah of Mayiladuturai.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 105.50 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 8,777 cusecs and the outflow 18,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Case against four in dowry case

TIRUNELVELI: The police are looking for four persons of a family for allegedly harassing a girl, demanding more dowry. The police said S. Maheshwari (30) of Vannarpettai was married to A. Sivasubramanian (40) of Tirunelveli recently. Her parents gave Rs. 1 lakh in cash and 25 sovereigns of gold ornaments to the groom at the time of marriage. Sivasubramanian, his father Arunachalam, mother Saraswathi and sister Ramalakshmi reportedly tortured Ms. Maheshwari demanding more dowry.

Retired teacher commits suicide

Nagercoil: A retired teacher committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on Saturday. According to police sources, Raj (62), of Pazavilai near Nagercoil, took the extreme step following a quarrel with his son Mani.— Staff Reporter

10 Sri Lankan fishermen held

Tuticorin: Coast Guard officials have arrested ten Sri Lankan fishermen for fishing in the Indian waters without proper documents.

The officials noticed two mechanised boats about 76 nautical miles off Muttom coast in Kanayakumari district on Thursday while they were patrolling the area in a surveillance aircraft. They immediately alerted the Coast Guard station at Tuticorin. Subsequently, a team of officers rushed to the area and arrested the fishermen, as they were not having any documents to enter the Indian territorial waters.

On reaching the shore on Saturday, the officials handed them over to the police for further enquiry. — Staff Reporter

Sri Lankan boat seized

Ramanathapuram: Customs officials on Saturday seized a Sri Lankan boat with 20 bags of tobacco.

Sources said the occupants escaped after abandoning the boat at Dhanushkodi. — Staff Reporter

Prize for metallurgist

CHENNAI: Metallurgist G. Venkataraman has won this year's ASM International's Metallographic Contest-2006 at its 39th annual convention in Chicago. He is the only Indian metallurgist to win a prize in this year's contest, and his entry was under the classification of new, unique and unusual techniques in Microscopy. Titled Improved Jet Electropolishing and Thinning of TEM Foils using new type Cathode Gun and Secondary Anode Leak Current Sensor, he won the Honourable Mention Prize.

Dr. Venkataraman has won the award 27 times since 1982 for various development works pertaining to applications in industry. A consultant to Thermax, Babcock and Wilcox Ltd., Pune, he retired as Additional General Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, in 2000. — Special Correspondent

Bill to replace ordinance introduced

CHENNAI: A bill was introduced in the Assembly on Saturday to replace the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) Ordinance, 2006, promulgated by the Governor on July 14.

The purpose of the bill was to amend the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act 1959, to delete the upper age limit for appointment of trustees, to ensure one woman on the Board of Trustees of religious institutions, and to reduce the term of office of the non-hereditary trustees from three years to one year. — Special Correspondent

MoU signed to combat oil spillage

Tuticorin: The Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC) to combat oil spillage in the port area.

N.K. Raghupathy, TPT Chairman, said IOC and SPIC had agreed to contribute Rs. 2 crore towards procurement of equipment to combat oil spillage. Of the total cost, 97 per cent would be borne by the IOC and the rest by SPIC.— Staff Reporter

Rs. 4 crore sanctioned for university

ERODE: The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned Rs. 4 crore to the Tamil Nadu Open University for carrying out development works, according to Vice-Chancellor M.S. Palanisamy. — Staff Reporter
