Ashraful leads from the front

NAIROBI: Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful led from the front, as he remained unbeaten on 67 to guide his team to a six-wicket win against Kenya in the first one-day international at the Gymkhana Club Ground here on Saturday.

Kenya, put in, lost the openers — Otieno and Ouma— cheaply with four runs on the board. Steve Tikolo (47) and Hitesh Modi (22) took the score past 100 before falling to Abdur Razzaq and Saqibul Hasan respectively. No. 7 T. Mishra made 35 and the rest of the batsmen did not make any impact. Kenya finished at 168 in 49.1 overs.

Wicket takers

Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak took three wickets apiece.

Bangladesh started badly, losing the opener Shahriar Nafees for seven. Skipper Ashraful, who came in at No. 5, and Farhad Reza (34) helped their team reach its target in 30.1 overs. Ashraful played a pivotal role in the match-winning partnership with 12 fours and one six from 60 deliveries.

The second of the three one-day internationals is on Sunday in Nairobi.
