ONGOLE: The Students Federation of India (SFI) has undertaken a marathon cycle yatra to study the conditions prevailing in educational institutions and welfare hostels in Prakasam district. State secretary of the SFI K. Hari Kishore flagged off the 12-day cycle rally at Podili on Saturday. A nine-member team started cycling to visit 80 high schools, 40 colleges and 160 welfare hostels in the district. It would touch 50 out of total 56 mandals in the district.
Rented accommodation
SFI district president E.V.B. Kumar and district secretary B. Venkatarao were leading the yatra. They said that many welfare hostels lacked basic amenities like drinking water, proper buildings, toilets and tutors. As the Government has not filled the posts of sweeper and watchman in many hostels, students were forced to sweep the floor and fetch water at these places, the SFI leaders said. As many hostels were located in rented buildings without toilets, girl students were subjected to inconvenience. They said wardens in most cases did not stay at the place of posting and visited the hostels once in two or three days. Students were not able to concentrate on their studies because the Government had not appointed tutors even on contract basis till now. They said the yatra would study these problems faced by hotel students and also the working of Government-aided high schools and colleges in the district.
