BIJAPUR: The special sitting of the zilla panchayat general body here on Friday voiced concern over the grim situation along the Bhima and the Krishna owing to the flood. The meeting chaired by zilla panchayat president Arjun Rathod emphasised the urgent need to provide relief to affected people. Initiating debate, former president and Congress member Yashwantharaygouda Patil said water release from dams in Maharashtra should be regulated. People along the river banks had not been informed of the water release in advance putting their lives at risk, he said. Mr. Patil criticised the administration for not projecting the real picture in its reports on floods to the Government, as a result of which the district was deprived of its due relief. Opposition leader in the zilla panchayat, Panchappa Kalburgi, said Maharashtra had constructed many small dams without permission from the Central Water Commission (CWC). With the help of the Union Government, the State should ensure a survey all illegal projects in Maharashtra, he said. Members also favoured relocating families in low-lying villages as a permanent solution to the problem of flooding. Members Babu Metri, Danappa Kattimani, Somnath Bagalkot and Rajugouda drew the attention of the House to the drought in other parts of the district. MLA R.K. Rathod, vice-president Shivanagouda Patil and Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Ranjan participated.
