MLAs start declaring assets

Lok Ayukta had sent a report to the Governor about legislators not declaring assets


  • Presiding Officers of the two Houses intimated the legislators about the lapse
  • As on June 30, 104 MLAs and 30 MLCs had not filed details with the Lok Ayukta

    BANGALORE: The process of legislators filing details of their assets and liabilities has begun after the Lok Ayukta sent a report to the Governor about the non-compliance of provisions by a majority of legislators, including Chief Minister and Ministers.

    As on June 30, when the list of non-compliance was prepared, 104 MLAs and 30 MLCs had not submitted the details.

    After the Presiding Officers of the two Houses sent intimation to the legislators concerned to file details in two months, at least half of them have complied. Many more are expected to file before the expiry of the stipulated two-month period.

    According to Lok Ayukta sources, among those who have filed details of assets and liabilities were Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy; his brother H.D. Revanna; and Law Minister M.P. Prakash. Mr. Prakash filed the statement on July 13, followed by Mr. Kumaraswamy five days later and Mr. Revanna on August 10.

    Perhaps it was in the context of having filed the details already, Mr. Kumaraswamy dismissed the allegations made by the former Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, and said: "I request the Lok Ayukta to make public my family assets on their website."

    Lok Ayukta sources said that they would wait till the end of this month before preparing the final list of defaulters for being published in four prominent newspapers of Karnataka as required under the Lok Ayukta Act for information to the public.

    Setting an example

    Meanwhile details of the assets and liabilities of the new Lok Ayukta N. Santosh Hegde; Upa Lok Ayukta G. Patri Basavana Goud; and Registrar L. Subramanya had been put on the website of the Lokayukta (www.kar.nic.in/lokayukta) .

    According to details available, Mr. Hegde has Rs. 28.88 lakh in two savings bank accounts and one foreign exchange account in nationalised banks, his wife Sharada Hegde has Rs. 37,798 in savings bank account; Mr. Goud has a house in Judicial Officers' Layout in Sanjay Nagar estimated at Rs. 40 lakh, a site at Gudikote in Kudligi taluk of Bellary district estimated at Rs. 20,000, 3.65 acres of irrigated land and five acres of dry land in Gudikote estimated at Rs. 4 lakh, two savings bank accounts with a total of about Rs. 97,000 and National Savings Certificates for Rs. 50,000.

    Mr. Subramanya has declared that he has two houses in Indiranagar and Judicial Officers' Layout from which he gets a rent of Rs. 18,000 a month and he is liable to pay advance of Rs. 67,000 and Rs. 87,000 received from the tenants, a fixed deposit for Rs. 1.30 lakh in Karnataka Judicial Officers' Credit Cooperative Society and two other fix deposits with a total of Rs. 12,545 and a bank balance of Rs. 30,000.

    He has a loan of Rs. 12 lakh from State Bank of India for house construction, a car, a scooter and general provident fund of Rs. 1.07 lakh. His wife is depending on him and his son, L.S. Karthik, is working and earning.
