WHO IS STRONGER: Women slugging it out in the tug-of-war competition as part of `Nati vota' organised in Kaggodlu in Kodagu district.
Madikeri: Rain or sunshine, sports culture reigns supreme in Kodagu. Conducting competitions in traditional wetland sports and games in the district may have declined with modern views creeping in, but it has not stopped the "Nati Vota" (wetland sprint), the annual State-level wetland sports and games meet at Kaggodlu, near here. Inclement weather and looming rain clouds did not deter sports buffs from reaching Kaggodlu. Braving heavy rains, several hundreds of sports lovers gathered at the wetlands belonging to the late C.D. Bopaiah. The "Nati Vota," sprint in the wetlands, marks the culmination of paddy transplant work. Superintendent of Police Ramachandra Rao inaugurated the event. The tug-of-war competitions, involving men's and women's teams, stole many hearts. Volleyball competitions gave a good feast to the onlookers as people who were passing by stopped their vehicles to have a glimpse of the sport. The Nehru Yuva Kendra, Department of Youth Services and Sports, Youth Hostel Association of India and the District and taluk Yuva Okkoota organised the event.
