Madikeri: The third Madikeri taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be organised in Murnad on November 3, according to a statement issued by president of the taluk unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat K.T. Baby Mathew here on Saturday. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by president of the Murnad gram panchayat P.K. Appanna, Mr. Mathew said. The sammelan assumes significance in view of the observance of the Suvarna Karanataka year, he said. Various sub-committees have been formed with Mr. Appanna being selected to head the reception committee. Former member of the Madkeri taluk panchayat Ganesh Ramakrishna would be president of the finance sub-committee; K. Raghu Thammaiah would head the food sub-committee and the procession sub-committee would be headed by B.M. Saraswathi, principal of the Murnad Junior College. Mr. Appanna sought the cooperation of the public, various associations and organisations, members representing the gram panchayat, taluk panchayat and the zilla panchayat, to ensure that the sammleam was a success. Deergakeshi Shivanna, Zilla Panchayat member representing Murnad, spoke.
Criticised
Appachattolanda Manu Muthappa, zilla panchayat member representing Napoklu, criticised attempts being made by some States, which, he alleged, nursed a despised view on Kannada and Kannadigas. In spite of the attacks on their language and culture, Kannadigas showed exemplary patience, he said, according to a press release. He was addressing a gathering at Ballamavati village on the occasion of the Monnada Chengappa endowment lecture for the year 2006-07, on the growth of Kannada and Kodava languages. Those coming into the State from neighbouring States should encourage Kannada, besides learning it themselves, Mr. Muthappa said. He lauded the efforts of the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy and the Kodava newspapers published from Kodagu in working for the growth of Kodava language in the State. Former president of the Ballamavati gram panchayat Neravanda Umesh said Kannada was a rich language with a unique history. More literary works were needed in both Kodava and Kannada to enrich the languages, he felt. President of the Netaji Educational Institution B.D. Biddaiah spoke. President of the Madikeri taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, K.T. Baby Mathew presided.
