Madikeri: After a brief lull, rainfall intensified in Kodagu district since the last two days, brushing aside the feeling that the monsoon is on the wane. Three buffaloes were electrocuted at Baichanhalli village, near Kushalnagar, in Somwarpet taluk on Friday, according to information received here. The cattle came in contact with live wires that had snapped owing to the rain and were electrocuted. Alert citizens called the CESCOM personnel and averted further danger. Talacauvery and Bhagamandala areas recorded over 200 mm of rainfall from 8 a.m. on Thursday till 8 a.m. on Friday. The level of the Cauvery has risen considerably following copious rains. Water had submerged the Sangam area in Bhagamandala on Friday. In the last 24 hours (from 8 a.m. on Friday till 8 a.m. on Saturday), Bhagamandala received 125.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Talacauvery with 95 mm. Heavy gale resulted in snapping of electric supply lines in many parts of the district. Madikeri city and surrounding areas, in particular, remained without power or experienced frequent power interruptions in the last two days. Fog and chill conditions in Madikeri have forced people to stay indoors. The district administration had put its machinery on alert in view of possible floods if the rains continued on Sunday. Minor incidents of landslips and crashing of tree branches were reported from different parts of the district. In the last 24 hours in Virajpet taluk, Srimangala received 60 mm of rainfall, Ponnampet (52 mm), Goncioppa (25 mm), Virajpet (74.4 mm), Siddapur (39.4 mm). In Somwarpet taluk, Somwarpet received 58.6 mm, Shanivarasante (39.4 mm) and Sunticoppa (34 mm). In Madikeri taluk, Napoklu received 70.2 mm, apart from Bhagamandala and Talacauvery. The water level at Harangi reservoir on Saturday stood at 2858.50 feet as against its maximum of 2859 feet. Inflow has increased to 9,223 cusecs while outflow into the river was put at 9,828 cusecs.
