Six new records set on opening day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six new records were set on the opening day of the 54th State aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming pool here on Saturday.

T.K. Senthilkumar, competing in the State championships after a gap of nine years, made it a memorable one by breaking his own record in the 50m backstroke. Though nowhere near his best, Senthil Kumar clocked 0:29.14 to break the old record (0:29.35) set in 1997.

National medal winners, V. Remya and M. Mini also set new meet records in the 400m IM and 100m breaststroke events respectively. The Thiruvananthapuram 4x200m freestyle relay squad of V. Remya, Saranya S. Nair, A.R. Rohini and B. Praveena set a new mark (9:52.60) by breaking the seven year old record set by Thrissur (10.07.29) set in 1999.

The day's other record breakers were Josna P. Joy (200m freestyle) and M. Manusha (50m freestyle).

Thiruvananthapuram was leading the points tally with 212 points followed by Thrissur (185) and Wayand (43) at the end of the first day's competition.

Ajitha corners glory

V. Ajitha (SBT) bagged a memorable double in the inaugural Vijayalakshmi memorial district ranking women's carrom tournament here on Saturday.

In the singles, Ajitha defeated her teammate and doubles partner K. Chithra 25-12, 19-25, 25-19 to claim the title. Earlier, Ajitha and Chithra prevailed over Reetha and Surya (LIC) 13-25, 25-18, 25-12.

The results: Women's singles (final): V. Ajitha bt K. Chithra 25-12, 19-25, 25-19. Semifinals: Ajitha bt Aswathy 25-15, 25-17; Chithra bt Reetha 25-12, 25-13. Women's doubles: V. Ajitha/ K. Chithra bt Reetha/ Surya 13-25, 25-18, 25-12.

Semifinals: Ajitha/ Chithra bt Anjali/ Aswathy 25-12, 11-25, 25-16; Reetha/ Surya bt Sheeja/ Sugandhi 25-10, 25-12.

Double for George

George Joseph Poopally won the billiards and snooker titles in the Platinum Jubilee tournament at Lotus Club, Ernakulam.

Final placings (billiards): 1. George Joseph Poopally, 2. M. Pratap, 3. Asgar Majeed. Snooker: 1. George Joseph Poopally, 2. Joseph Mathew Palal, 3. C. Krishnan.

Chess tournament

The second RSC all-Kerala open chess tournament will be held at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kadavanthra, Kochi, from August 26 to 28. Leading players from all over the State will be seen in action. Special prizes will be given in the under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, under-20, best woman and to the best veteran player. Entries may be sent to the Regional Sports Centre, Kadavanthra, Kochi 682020 (Ph: 0484-2204068, 2205071).

Jaison, Megha to lead

Jaison Xavier and Megha Merin Ninan will lead the Ernakulam district men's and women's teams, respectively, in the forthcoming State inter-district badminton championships.
