Indian team for AFC Asian Cup qualifier

KOLKATA: A 22-member Indian football squad for the August 16 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia was announced here on Saturday. The squad included Bhaichung Bhutia who joined the camp late.

Announcing the squad, the Indian team manager and former international Pradip Chowdhury, said a 20-member squad would be registered before the Saudi Arabia match. The two to be dropped would be announced in a couple of days.

Chowdhury said the team's captain would also be named then.

The camp, which was being held at the SAI, Eastern Centre, under the watchful eyes of National coach, Bob Houghton, would be without Madhav Das (Mohammedan Sporting), Tarif Ahmed (East Bengal), Abdul Bashir (SBT), Jo Paul Ancheri (Kerala) and Syed Rahim Nabi (East Bengal). All these five were discarded.

The squad: Goalkeepers: Sandip Nandy (Mahindra United), Subrata Paul (Mohun Bagan), Subhasis Roy Chaudhary (Mahindra United). Defenders: Surkumar Singh (Mahindra United), N.S. Manju (Mahindra United), Deepak Mondal (Mohun Bagan), Samir Naik (Dempo SC), Anupam Sarkar (East Bengal), Narinder Singh (JCT), N.P. Pradeep (Mahindra United), Habibur Rehman Mondal (East Bengal), Sanjiv Maria (Mohun Bagan). Midfielders: S. Venkatesh (Mahindra United), Steven Dias (Mahindra United), Mehrajuddin Wadoo (Mohun Bagan), Manjit Singh (Bengal), P. Renedy Singh (JCT), Bibiano Fernandes (East Bengal). Forwards: Fredy Mascarnhas (East Bengal), Alvito D'Cunha (East Bengal), Sunil Chhetri (JCT), Baichung Bhutia (Mohun Bagan).
