ON TARGET: Dola Banerjee of Indian Railway put up a good show to win the recurve event in the National ranking prize money archery championship in Kolkata on Saturday.
KOLKATA: With two Olympic rounds gone through on the penultimate day of the National ranking prize money archery championship at the SAI, Eastern Centre, a clear picture has emerged before the final round competition on Sunday. In the all-important recurve section, Rahul Banerjee of Jharkhand and Mangal Singh Champia of Andhra Pradesh emerged champions in the first and second Olympic rounds respectively in the men's section while National champion L. Bombayla Devi of Manipur and Dola Banerjee of Railways won the women's section. It was a disappointing day for National men's champion Jayanta Talukdar as he lost to Banerjee in the final of the first Olympic round at 101 to 104 and in the second he was eliminated in the second round by ultimate champion Champia at 111-109. Bombayla Devi outshot Chekrevolu Swuro of Nagaland in the first final at 102 to 94 and in the second final Dola downed Punya Prabha of Uttar Pradesh 103 to 101. Bombayla lost to Sushma of Uttar Pradesh in the quarterfinals by two points, 96-98. Jhano Hansadh of Jharkhand continued to dominate the women's compound section winning both the Olympic round contests while Dinesh Pandwala of Rajasthan, who won the first competition, fell to Paltan Hansda of Jharkhand in the second final. The Archery Association of India would select 16 men and eight women in the recurve section for the final Asian Games trials to be held at Jamshedpur in September.
