Congress activists attack mediamen

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Attacks on mediapersons by activists of political parties are on the rise in the district.

On Saturday, Congress activists allegedly attacked cameramen of two Telugu news channels when they went to Chukkaluru village in Tadipatri mandal for covering a Congress leader's killing.

The cadre allegedly attacked videographers Rajesh and Noor Basha - and a couple of reporters - after they spoke to the family members of Vishwanatha Reddy, whose group was suspected for the Congress leader's murder.

Apart from attacking mediamen, the activists snatched Rajesh's video camera and damaged it.

When they tried to snatch Noor Basha's camera, the cameramen took to their heels.

The mediamenwere allegedly chased on a four-wheeler to the outskirts of Tadipatri.

In May 2005, several mediapersons were injured when TDP activists and police targeted them after trouble broke out during the filing of nomination papers by Paritala Sunita for Penukonda by-election.

A few days before the incident, a few cameraman and reporters were chased, allegedly by J.C. Diwakar Reddy's supporters, near his residence here.

Similarly, a television channel reporter was allegedly manhandled by Congress activists on May 31 here after Mr. Reddy forced the former to leave the premises of a Government programme being covered by him.
