KOCHI: The State Government is planning to set up three product-specific Special Economic Zones in the State at Kanjikkode (textiles), Kalamasserry (gem and jewellery) and Kasaragod (multi-products). The proposals in this regard will have to be approved by the Union Government. This was disclosed by Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim at an interactive session on "Special Economic Zones in Kerala context," organised by Kinfra here on Saturday. P.H. Kurian, Secretary, Investment Promotion, said a leisure SEZ was under consideration, for which a report had been prepared by a consulting agency. T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary (Industries), said the Union Government had given approval for setting up three SEZs in the State recently. These included SEZs for animation and gaming at the Kinfra Film and Video Park, Kazhakuttom, Thiruvananthapuram; one for electronics, exclusively hardware, at Kinfra Hi-tech Park at Kalamasserry; and the other for food processing at the Kinfra park at Kakkancherry, near Calicut University.
