Thiruvananthapuram: The Travel Corporation of India, Kochi has bagged the Kerala State Tourism Award for having handled the maximum number of tourists and for the travel agent who earned the most foreign exchange during 2004-2005. The Great India Tour Company (GITC) Pvt Ltd, Thiruvananthapuram, won the State Tourism Award for the Best Tour Operator and the award for marketing the Best Tourism Product (Medical Tourism). H. Rajagopal Iyer, Corporate Director, Udaya Samudra, was selected as the Best Hotel Manager. Taj Residency, Marine Drive, Kochi, was adjudged the Best Five-Star Hotel and Taj Malabar Hotel, Wellington Island, Kochi, the Best Five-Star Deluxe Hotel. Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom was adjudged the Best Heritage Hotel in the awards announced here on Saturday. The hotels run by the State-owned Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) also won awards for the best hotels in the One and Two star section. Periyar House, Thekkady bagged the award for the Best One-Star hotel. Hotel Samudra in Kovalam won the Best Two-Star Hotel Award. Marari Beach, Mararikkulam, Alappuzha, was adjudged the Best Three-Star hotel. Somatheeram Ayurvedic Hospital and Yoga Centre, Chowara near Kovalam was selected as the Best Approved and Classified Ayurvedic Centre and Tranquil, Wayanad the Best Approved Homestay facility. Rainbow cruises, Alappuzha, was adjudged the Best Approved and Classified House Boat Operator and KTDC's Motel Araam, Krishnapuram, Kayamkulam, the Best Motel/Wayside Amenity Centre. Spice Village, Thekkady won the Most Eco-friendly Tourism Project award. The award for the best Performing District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) went to Kannur. K.S. Rajasekharan of Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram won the award for the Best Tourism related Documentary. St. Catherine High School, Payyampally, Wayanad bagged the Best Tourism Club Award. Susmitha Shekar of St. Xaviers College for Women, Aluva was adjudged the Best Tourism Club Student Coordinator. Oriental School of Hotel Management, Vythiri, Wayanad, was selected for the award for the Best Tourism/Hotel Management Institute. Tourism India was chosen as the Best Tourism Publication/Brochure. An official release said the selection, by the judging committee comprising the Tourism Principal Secretary, Director of Tourism and representatives of the Planning and Finance Departments, was based on the guidelines issued by the Government.
