Garib Nawaz express train chugs into Bellary railway station

WARM WELCOME: Members of Jain Yuva Sangha in a jubilant mood when the Yeswantpur-Ajmer direct train reached Bellary station on Friday night.

BELLARY: A large number of people were at the railway stations here and at Hospet on Friday to receive the Yeshwantpur-Ajmer Garib Nawaz express train.

With this new service, their demand for a long distance train to pass through the region has been fulfilled.

The train passes through Guntakal, Bellary, Hospet, and Gadag. It is the first long-distance train passing through the region after the formation of South-West Railway Zone with its headquarters in Hubli on April 1, 2003.

The introduction of this service will benefit people from the region visiting Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Direct trains sought

People of the region have been demanding that the Railways introduce direct trains between Chennai and Mumbai, and Bangalore and Ajmer among other major centres. Babulal Jain, member of the National

Rail-Users' Consultative Committee pursued the matter with the Railways and ensured the introduction of a direct train for the benefit of the people of the region.

The people of the region were unhappy with the Railways for not introducing new trains on this route despite the Hospet-Bellary sector contributing freight revenue of Rs. 1,000 crore a year by way of iron ore movement to the Chennai, Vishakapatanam and Goa ports.

People intending to travel by train towards northern or southern parts of the country had to go to Guntakal.

At the Bellary railway station, members of the Jain Yuva Sangha distributed sweets to the people.
