MLA seeks CLP meeting on court order on sealings

Staff Reporter

Writes to CM; wants party legislatures to discuss the issue

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress MLA and Delhi Jal Board Vice-Chairman, Bhisham Sharma, on Saturday demanded convening of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting to discuss the serious situation arising out of the recent direction of the Supreme Court to start sealing of shops operating illegally from residential areas from September 15.

Mr. Sharma said he had written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit drawing her attention to the issue and sought an emergency meeting of the CLP so that party MLAs were able to discuss the matter in detail and try to find a solution to the impasse. Similarly, he said the CLP could also decide to approach the Union Urban Development Ministry collectively to make the necessary changes in the Mater Plan for Delhi-2001 and also to expedite finalisation of the new Master Plan for Delhi-2021. Mr. Sharma said the situation was very serious and required immediate attention of the political leadership as lakhs of people who would stand affected.

Stating that they respected the Apex Court's order, Mr. Sharma said some middle path had to be found as people cannot be left in the lurch to fend for themselves. He urged Ms. Dikshit not to lose time and convene a CLP meeting to discuss the matter with the party MLAs.

Similarly, Poorvanchal leader and Nasirpur MLA, Mahabal Mishra, said although the July 21 notification of the Urban Development Ministry on mixed land use and building by-laws was still valid but the fear of sealing was sending a wrong message that needs to be corrected. He said the demand for a CLP meeting was a valid one as it would help in arriving at a consensus and also help convey the sentiments of elected representatives to the Urban Development Ministry. Mr. Mishra said fear had once again gripped the people as the Supreme Court deadline for starting sealing was approaching fast.
