Congress to organise regional conferences

CHENNAI: The Congress Party will organise regional conferences at Tirunelveli, Gobichettipalayam and Vellore or Tiruvannamalai ahead of the coming local body polls, according to the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, M. Krishnasswamy.

Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Mr. Krishnasswamy said the decision was taken at a party meeting, which was attended by Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, Mani Shankar Aiyar and E.V.K.S. Elangovan, besides K.V. Thangkabalu, R. Prabu and Jayanthi Natarajan.

The leaders agreed to tour the State after the parliamentary session, he said, adding that the first of the three conferences would be held in the first week of September.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be invited for all the meets, Mr. Krishnasswamy said. He also announced that about 200 cadre of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and about 300 from the Lol Jansakthi Party joined the Congress on Saturday.

Mr. Elangovan said the conferences had been planned keeping in mind the approaching local body polls, and also to enthuse party workers.
