Houses inundated in Kundapur

Udupi: Some houses were inundated at Marvanthe, Badakere, Navunda, Trasi and Senapura villages in Kundapur taluk as the water level in the Souparnika and its tributaries increased steeply on Saturday.

Official sources said the Souparnika was in spate as heavy rain lashed the Western Ghats. People living in the islands had been evacuated. Twelve families had been shifted to a school at Badakere. Ten houses had been inundated in Uppinakudru village, they added.

Sea erosion had been reported from Marvanthe. Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat P. Hemalatha, and Assistant Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma had visited the affected areas, the sources said.

Sea erosion had also been reported from Kodikanyana in Udupi taluk. Five houses had been damaged in Udupi taluk owing to heavy rain.

Udupi district recorded 50.3 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. Udupi recorded 36.6 mm, Karkala 38.2 mm, and Kundapur 76.2 mm., the sources said
