CHENNAI: Over 100 farmers attended a camp on methods to enhance harvest yields at the Ambattur Uzhavar Sandhai (Farmer's Market) here on Thursday. The Villivakkam MLA, Ranganathan, presided and handed over soil reports to two farmers who had opted to have their soil tested. Soil chemistry and the need to understand how suitable a soil is for a particular crop were also introduced. Jebakumari Annie, assistant director, department of horticulture, explained the integrated horticulture development scheme, precision farming and micro irrigation schemes to the farmers and told them about the available subsidy patterns. The farmers from Minjur, Puzhal and Ambattur blocks also learnt about drip irrigation. Mr. Ranganathan informed the Thiruvallur district's plan to source all the vegetables required for government institutions, worth Rs. 9 lakh per month, from the three Uzhavar Sandhais at Thiruttani, Thiruvallur and Ambattur and hoped that it would be implemented well. The scheme had been announced by Thiruvallur collector, Ranvir Prasad, at a similar camp organised at the Uzhavar Sandhai in Thiruvallur last Saturday.
